Surely one of the most important phases of any project is the planning. Without proper care and attention to the details any building work can be a disaster in construction and a nightmare a long time afterwards.
Planning doesn't start and finish with design and architectural drawings. These have to conform to local regulations and proper building safety standards incorporated right from the start.
There must be no short cuts, no quick fixes to get the job done fast. Town hall permissions and approval is usually where the marathon paper-chase and the long wait begins. Whilst the Moors left the island quite a while ago some say that not all of the 'Arabs' went with them.
Experienced friendly contact with the local authorities can appear to work miracles. It probably true wherever you go in the world but certain no more than here in Mallorca. Who you know and how you get on with them counts for a great deal for any stranger coming to a new 'village'.
And then, of course, there's the legal stuff. Laws and customs totally strange and foreign to the in-comer baffling even those with an honours degree in Spanish. Those without can be left with a thousand-yard stare, faith in their fellow man and their fingers crossed. Not very good for the old 'caveat emptor'.
Everybody has to hope the lawyers doing a good job; hopes that they're not doing 'extra' and possibly unnecessary work. But without the right guide how will ever know - until the problems start - and by then it's usually too late.
